Animals have been a part of my life for my entire life. I’ve always loved interacting with them — petting them, taking care of them, and just hanging out with them. I’ve been lucky to have had some really special companion animals in my life — although all animals are special! By having animals in my life from the time I was born, it’s had a huge impact on me — a very positive impact. I’ve learned a lot from animals — I’ve gained life skills and really great personal traits from being around them. Animals have helped me in so many different ways. Here are a few ways animals have really had a positive impact on me!
First and foremost, it’s because of my lifetime experience with animals that I went vegan. My love of my companion animals helped make me realize how hypocritical it is to eat cows, pigs, chickens, and turkeys (and any other animals). These animals (and the billions of other land animals and trillions of ocean life killed for food every year) are just as innocent and deserving of love as my companion animals. Society makes us think that certain animals are worthy of our love and affection, while others are just food; but, the reality is that every animal feels fear, pain, and sadness, and wants to live. The animals in my life helped open my eyes to this. Now I choose to live an ethical vegan lifestyle because I don’t believe in contributing to any animal exploitation whatsoever. I could never not be vegan now because I love animals too much!
Animals have also been there for me when people haven’t — not including my family. Growing up, I went through periods of being bullied at school and not really having too many friends. I always had a supportive and loving family, but it wasn’t always the same at school. I’ll be honest, even to this day I have a bit of a hard time making friends. But I’ve never had this issue with animals. Animals have always brought me so much comfort. They were my friends, when people weren’t. For this, I will be forever grateful to them.
And they’ve also taught me that love and compassion are the most important things in the world. Animals love those who love them — they don’t care who you are, what you look like, what or who you like, and so much more! They never judge you, no matter what. Non-human animals have the purest of hearts and they don’t seem to carry the same amount of judgement that humans do. I fully believe that the unconditional love I’ve always received from animals has helped shape me into a person that I’m proud to be. I try to always choose compassion in everything I do or say, and I’ve learned not to be judgemental — especially about the stuff that doesn’t matter — and show love as much as possible.
