What I LOVE About Thrifting

Today I thought I’d talk a bit about why I really love to go thrift store shopping! I’ve been shopping at thrift stores all my life because it’s something that I really enjoy doing. Since moving to the city I live in now 7 years ago, thrifting has become a hobby for my grandma and I. My grandma loves to go thrifting and so do I, so it’s something we like to do together. I love being able to bond with her while doing something that we both love! There’s all kinds of other things I love about thrifting, though, so here are a few more things!

First and foremost, shopping at thrift stores saves lots of money. Every store has its own prices — some being cheaper or more expensive than others — but no matter what thrift store you go to, you’ll save lots of money! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone thrifting and found new or almost new items for a fraction of what they would have been at their original price. Thrifting is a good way for anybody to save money while still finding what they’re looking for.

Shopping at thrift stores also doesn’t contribute directly to the fast fashion industry. The fast fashion industry is an issue that has really come to my attention in the last year or so. As a society, we spend so much money on clothing items that are on-trend, but are not made to last. So many people — including myself until about a year ago — don’t realize how much waste all of these low-quality, trendy pieces creates. So much of it ends up in landfills and it’s simply not sustainable. Even when we donate items to thrift stores, the items still, many times, end up in the garbage. This is why thrifting is a great thing! By shopping for clothing in thrift stores, we’re not contributing to the waste as much. We’re helping to prevent items filling landfills. There are all kinds of trendy and stylish clothing pieces in thrift stores, so it’s just not worth directly supporting the fast fashion industry.

I also love that you never know what you’ll find. Any time I’ve gone thrifting, I always see so many good-quality, original items. A lot of people donate some really nice stuff, so thrifting is an adventure every time!

Shopping at thrift stores also, many times, supports good causes. A lot of different thrift stores work with various charities, so by shopping at certain thrift stores, we’re helping these charities! It feels good to save money and help others at the same time!

It’s fun to shop at thrift stores because nothing is off limits — price-wise, I mean! Tell me I’m not the only one who’s gone into a store to buy something new, only to look at the price, been shocked at how much it was, and then moved on! But by shopping in thrift stores, there’s no need to worry about that. Sure, are there items in some thrift stores that are not worth the money the store is charging? Absolutely; but about 99% of items are priced reasonably. So many good-quality items in thrift stores are priced at a fraction of what they were when they were new. It’s so nice to be able to shop in a store and have everything that I find be super affordable!

And the final thing that I really love about shopping at thrift stores is that there’s new stuff all the time. Any time is a good time to go thrifting because most stores are receiving and restocking the shelves with new stuff all the time! Any time I’ve gone thrifting, there’s always new stuff to look at. Sometimes it’s easy to get carried away, but it’s so fun going to my local thrift stores to see what I’ll find!

Do you shop at thrift stores? What do you love about it?
